A combination pill can be started at any time. If started within 5 days after the beginning of a period, it is effective right away. If started any other time during a menstrual cycle, effective protection starts after 7 days. Use another method of birth control in this case. A progestin-only pill can also be started at any time, but a back-up method is needed for vaginal intercourse during the first 48 hours of the pill use — protection will begin after 2 days. If you take it more than 3 hours past the regular time, you also need a back-up for 48 hours after taking the late pill. Back-ups include condom, female condom , diaphragm , or sponge. You can also use emergency contraception (morning after pill).
Taking the pills at the same time each day makes them more effective. Pick a time of day that is easy to remember. It might be helpful to take it when you do something else you do every day — like brushing your teeth or eating dinner. Many women set an alarm on their cell phones or watches.
